The Ye Olde Arachnarium: Spinning Spider Science Into Schools, Stem Science and Society
GREAT NEWS! Our team have been working hard and have secured a grant to continue our outreach work into the near future. But now we need your help. For us to receive this grant, it is conditional on us raising at least £500 through this Jumpstart page. Help us make it happen and we can begin to excite and reconnect humans with the natural world.
Who Are we?
We are ArachNotts ('Nottingham's SpiderLab'🕷️), a research group based at the University of Nottingham, that studies how and why spiders do things - and then tries to understand why this is important.
When we aren't teaching or doing research together, we organise and run public engagement events that promote the importance of arachnids and the outdoors in an attempt to challenge perceptions and inspire future scientists.
Here are some of our most recent events:
Our Ambition: Spiders, scorpions and friends to the Rescue
In this project we aim to open the 'Ye Olde Arachnarium' exhibit, complete with a range of arachnid focussed invertebrates from around the world. We want to highlight the importance of this relatively understudied group whilst making some of the wonders of the natural world more accessible to students, school children and the general public.
This project will build on research and current outreach programmes, where our spiders have been used to engage a wide array of people, from nursery children to University staff. We will provide a facility in which live invertebrates can be used for teaching, practical classes, photography workshops, schools and local outreach festivals.
In addition to being a beneficial resource we aim to challenge public perceptions about arachnids and empower people by allowing them to make their own observations. ArachNotts has made great strides in this direction by hosting sessions with people who identify as arachnophobic as well as engaging with the next generation of potential scientists.
Where will the money go?
In order to achieve our project goals, we are allocating funds raised as follows:
- Live Animals (£800):
- Housing and Decorations (£850):
- Publicity (£150):
- Equipment (£300):
All donations received will go directly to the Ye Olde Arachnarium project. Any unanticipated under-spend of funds will be put towards maintenance and future ArachNotts public engagement events.
Help us succeed!
ArachNotts is committed to public engagement, outreach and citizen science. We aim to quickly establish a long term impact on the student and local community by engaging them with the world of arachnids. But as a team that takes on these projects in our own time, we need your help. With it we can build and establish a legacy of science education in Nottingham that will continue to have an impact for years to come.
In return for your support, we are offering exclusive rewards as our way of saying thank you for being part of our story. All donors will receive a public thank you at our opening event, through social media and on our website.
If you are unable to sponsor us with a donation, fear not! You can still help us succeed by broadcasting this project through the social media buttons and sharing the bitlink found in the network tab above.
In fact, why not share it with everyone? A living, breathing, and mobile invertebrate resource is an exciting way of reconnecting and learning about STEM science through the inspiration of the natural world. And the more people that know about it, the more likely we can make the 'Ye Olde Arachnarium' exhibit an experience to remember.
